According to an article by petfoodindustry, researchers have identified red lentil pasta by-products (LP) as a promising carbohydrate source for dog food, particularly due to its benefits for gut health and blood sugar management. A study with 40 dogs showed that substituting LP for rice at various levels had no negative effect on nutrient digestibility or kibble quality and even boosted gut health markers like beneficial fermentation by-products. Dogs fed the highest LP level also had lower post-meal glucose and insulin responses, suggesting LP’s potential in low-glycemic pet foods for dogs needing stable blood sugar. Additionally, LP’s high palatability and compatibility with sustainable, low-waste production processes highlight its appeal as an eco-friendly ingredient for pet food brands.
