Enifer, a Finnish biotech company, has filed for Novel Food authorization from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to bring its sustainable mycoprotein ingredient, PEKILO®, to the European market for both human and pet food applications. This filing follows the company’s recent funding of €33 million for a production facility, slated for completion by 2025, which will produce 3,000 tons of mycoprotein annually using food industry by-products. PEKILO, derived from a specialized fermentation process using a unique fungus strain, is rich in protein and fiber and has shown promising versatility in various food sectors, including pet food and alternative meats. Enifer is also seeking approval in other markets, such as the US and Singapore, while collaborating with global partners like Purina and Valio to develop new product applications.
