Agronomics announced that its portfolio company Meatly achieved a significant milestone by creating a protein-free, cultured medium at a low cost, reducing production costs to £1 ($1.25 USD) per liter. Founded in 2022 by Owen Ensor and Helder Cruz, Meatly specializes in ethical and sustainable cultivated proteins for pets. This innovation allows for industrial-scale production without relying on expensive ingredients like fetal bovine serum (FBS), making the technology economically viable. Meatly’s breakthrough enabled the creation of the world’s first cultivated, canned cat food, set to launch in the UK later this year in partnership with Omni. Jim Mellon, founder of Agronomics, emphasized that this development paves the way for mass adoption of cultivated meat products, with regulatory approval expected soon.
