According to latest data of the National Association of Manufacturers of Food for Companion Animals (ANFAAC), the Spanish pet industry has come back even stronger than before the pandemic. Last year, the turnover was €1.4 billion, an increase of 10% compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019 (€1.2 billion).

Although, dog food sales came up to €917.3 million (+8.4%), the biggest growth happened in the cat food sector with €575.7 million (+12.7%).

At the same time, Spanish pet food manufacturers produced 565,395 tons of pet food, thereof 171,221 tons of cat food (+8.6%) and 394,174 tons of dog food (+3.2%).

The increase was perceptible throughout all categories, while the biggest increase happened in the cat snacks (+32.2%) and cat wet food (+31.6%) ranges.

According to ANFAAC, the “good performance” of pet stores (sales +13.5%) helped the growth of the industry. Dog and cat snack sales e.g. increased by 24%.

Spain is in fourth place regarding the numbers of cats and dogs of all European countries, pursuant to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF).
