According to China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC), during the period from January to November, the country has imported over 44,000 tons of US pet food ($304 million =€288M) an increase of 200%.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the country’s imports to China have overtaken Canada by accounting for half of all pet food imports.

As to US officials, the Phase One trade bilateral agreement of 2020 was “significantly” conducive to this development since China expanded buyings of specific US commodities.

In 2021, Canada led the list of importing countries (47%). Last year, the country only accounted for 21% of pet food imports to China. This decrease is mainly due to the avian influenza epidemic in February 2022.

Next to Canada and the USA, New Zealand (12%) and Thailand (11%) have imported to China last year.

According to a reveal of Alibaba Group, sales of international pet food brands have increased from $100 million (€95M) in 2016 to $1 billion (€950M).
