Ahead of the General Election in July, UK Pet Food, the association for the UK’s pet food industry, has released its manifesto outlining its priorities for policymakers. The manifesto emphasizes four key areas: developing safe and sustainable pet food, facilitating trade with the EU and globally, ensuring animal welfare, and valuing the role of pets in human wellbeing. The association highlights that 85% of pet food ingredients are sourced from agricultural byproducts and urges government support for sustainable ingredient research, such as insect protein and cultivated meat. Additionally, UK Pet Food calls for improvements to the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement to remove trade barriers and enhance the pet food industry’s ability to import and export efficiently. The manifesto also stresses the importance of supporting UK farmers to enhance animal welfare and recognizing the positive impact of pet ownership on human wellbeing.
