In the first half of 2024, Russian pet food imports dropped by 40% compared to the previous year, largely due to difficulties in making payments for goods from politically friendly countries, and an increase in domestic production. Sergey Dankvert, head of Rosselhoznadzor, attributed the decline mainly to the rise in local pet food manufacturing. He also cited concerns about the accuracy of labeling on imported products, leading to stricter regulations. Despite the decline, new importers, particularly from Turkey and Asia, are exploring opportunities to enter the Russian market. Payment issues, especially with Chinese suppliers, are also impacting the supply chain, increasing costs and complicating expansion plans for Russian pet food companies
