The Global Alliance of Pet Food Associations (GAPFA) reassures stakeholders that extruded dry pet food and heat-treated, hermetically sealed poultry meat products remain safe for trade despite outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). According to the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH), these processing methods effectively inactivate the HPAI virus, ensuring pet food safety. GAPFA President Loretta Hunter emphasized that rigorous scientific evaluation confirms these products meet the Terrestrial Code’s standards, allowing continued international trade regardless of disease outbreaks. GAPFA has collaborated with WOAH since 2017 to establish global pet food safety standards and maintain strategic partnerships promoting pet nutrition and wellbeing.
