Finnish biotech company Enifer has conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) revealing that its mycoprotein ingredient, PEKILOPet, has significantly lower carbon emissions compared to traditional pet food proteins. The study found that PEKILOPet emits just 0.93 kgCO₂e per kilogram, which is 86% less than soy protein concentrate and five times lower than lamb-based pet food ingredients. Enifer’s CEO, Simo Ellilä, emphasized that these findings support the company’s mission to provide sustainable, high-protein pet food alternatives. The company is also advancing its €33 million production facility, expected to be operational by late 2025, which will produce 3,000 tons of PEKILOPet annually.
