A recent clinical study by ADM on the probiotic and postbiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis CECT 8145 (BPL1) demonstrated positive effects on gut health in adult dogs. Testing on Beagles and English Pointers revealed that both live and heat-treated forms of BPL1 were safe and beneficial, promoting increased fecal propionate levels, a marker of improved gut health. The heat-treated form’s comparable efficacy to the live strain allows manufacturers greater flexibility, as it does not require special conditions for live bacteria. This offers new options for pet product makers to support digestive health in pets.
